There is a tendency to faintness, even fainting, at any period of pregnancy. It is particularly likely to occur on suddenly standing from a sitting posture, or rapidly rising from a supine position. If such is the case, the best advice is to assume the new position gradually. Faintness is also likely to occur after prolonged standing in buses or on shopping tours, or when the woman is confined in a warm, close room. Recovery is rapid and without incident unless she falls and injures herself. If you have a tendency to faint during pregnancy, carry a bottle of smelling salts or aromatic spirits of ammonia in your handbag and, at the first suggestion of faintness, remove the stopper and inhale deeply.
