Naturalmaterial is a rather formal term which simply refers to the everyday substances which are the basis of our existence: water in varying quantities, earth in different textures, wood, vegetable matter, rock and metal. These materials have a universal appeal to children and adults alike, whether to with or work with, and it is important to understand their nature and limitations. It is easy to overstate the case for using natural rather than man-made materials, but to deplore the use of plastic and other technological wonders simply because they are man-made is to fly in the face of necessary progress. Nevertheless natural substances have a living, individual quality which makes them interesting and soothing to handle, they can be worked with simple tools and individual skill and effort to give a result which incorporates the individuality of both substance and craftsman. Children respond to them from a very early age and learn a great deal about them and through them.
